The weekend, part one.
Oct. 6th, 2003 09:42 amOkay, so am update on the weekend. It was a lot of fun, and that's not really a surprise. This keyboard sucks btw so it feels like I am typing like a SNAIL. We'll start off with Friday. What did I do on Friday? Friday night Steve CONVINCED me to go to the movies. For a change, generally I don't go. Well, I like Christopher Walken, so we saw the Rundown. It was okay, I was hoping he had a bigger part, but it had that little hot guy that was in the American
Pie movie, so I settled. Unfortunately, my strongest sense is smell. The whole time I was largely
aware that somehow had thrown up in that theatre and I could still smell it. It was clean, but I
can smell nearly anything. That was fun, regardless. It was a date I guess, and finding things to
call a "date," after 3 years becomes a little bit of a challenge. Suddenly you're with them all the
time, and what's the difference?
So, Saturday we slept in and that was great. Because we stayed out till 1 AM etc. we got up
and hung out with my brother. That's not too unusual. I'm always hanging out with my
brother. [Well, both Steve and I]. So, we went to KFC and got lunch, talked and did a couple of
errands before we went on our hike/camping trip. We got all of our packs together. This is a
usual routine for us now. All three of us are well accustomed to this. We generally pack in
between 30-40 lbs of gear a piece. It's pretty fun. Generally, our trips go waaaay smoother than
this last one. This was our least smooth hike/campout yet this year. And I've been on about 7
hike/campouts this summer. I do hikes as often as possible during the week. These days, with
4-10's and winter coming, I don't hike during the week like I used to. It used to be a 3-5 times a
week effort for me. I just wanted to loose weight and feel good about myself. And, in the end, I
lost 20 lbs and felt all the better for it. Now I have lots of leg muscle and we totally got into the
hiking and camping aspect. My brother, Steve, and I have collected the proper gear, and we live
for hiking to the lakes around where I live, [they all happen to be up a few miles of hiking and
these are steep hikes, uphill.]
So we packed our gear. I took 35 lbs, and the guys took like 40. We took Rufus this
time, and that was cool. As we drove up there we talked, and that was fun. [We drive to the
trailhead like 10 miles on this lousy gravel DNR [Department of Natural Resources] Road.
Steve, this time, was carrying more weight because he's gained about 20 lbs since he
stopped working at Target and since we last went on a trip... well, he was slowed up about a
quarter of the way up our 3 mile trip. Now, that sucked, so James took some weight out of his
pack after he got really laggy. About that time when Steve sped up, I pulled a quad muscle.
That slowed me up completely because there are these big stairs that are on the trail and with
every step, you use your quads to lift you up. So, if Steve had been slow, well, I got WORSE.
Luckily, we were pretty close to the top, otherwise I think we would have turned around and
called it a day. So, eventually, James took some of MY weight, which I was reluctant, because I
like taking the weight and I knew he had already taken some of Steve's. Generally, we never
have to encounter this because we all make it up just fine and there haven't been any issues like
this in my past 7 trips! But, James was okay. He had been roofing my grandparents' house for
like 2 weeks and gained muscle tone, while the whole month of September both Steve and I
had been busy at work. [All of August I was hiking/camping on my weekends]. But September
was impossible because of the roofing on the grandparents' house [which Steve and I helped
with, but James didn't have a job at that time so he worked on it like ALL the time.] So that
was good.
We made it to the top and my leg was fine on flat grounds, especially without the
extra weight. We threw our gear down and found a campsite. My dog was having a blast.
Normally I leave him behind because he slows us down. But this time, he was just fine. And he
loves camping. So that was that. I do have more about the trip, but I've got to hurry and make
something of my Monday off. So, I'll report back soon!
