Consumer Whoring
Oct. 31st, 2007 02:57 pmTime to write some more. It appears the office is slow this morning - and I seem to have hit the "OFF" button on my alarm clock, instead of snooze. Oops. I woke up at 7:30. Between paying off my crown, and being ahead... I did something very impulsive. Actually - I've been talking about it for a few months, and seriously considering it for a week or so. I bought a new digital camera. I was tired of my big one that started malfunctioning at some point (the lens... and the shutter... not working right anymore.) The funny thing is, the one I have now is tiny, and does 95% of the same things as my big Nikon. I liked my Nikon... I could probably get it fixed, but at this moment I realized on my hikes and for a lot of the things I do - I don't require or prefer a larger bodied camera.
I loved my Nikon but something about the last year seemed to have been harder on it than it needed. Right before I moved to SideA I kept trying to take pictures and things were just not going right. I stopped taking random pictures and this sort of bugged me. So, I did it.
I bought a Canon SD750 Elph digital. I spent some of yesterday doing accute research on what my best option for around $200 would be. The best scores were handed to the SD750 - and so were the best reviews from users. The final go ahead came from the 3 inch screen in the back, verses other 2.5 inch screens. Seeing as I'm blind - this bodes well for me. So far, it is actually much improved over the older point and shoot digis that were around when I last went shopping. And instead of low-balling it, I decided if I wanted anything of quality, I was going to spend about $200. It fit into my budget this month and payday is right around the bend.
I got mine at Costco due to the fact that many other places have a high price, or a 14 day return policy. They have instated a new electronics policy of 90 day return. (People who used the return policy as a lease policy, lease your hardware, make excuses about why they needed to exchange, and get a new machine...) These things catch up with both customers, and companies. Companies trying to be too lenient on return policies, and those customers that ... um, rationalize reasons for trading equipment that may or may not be... in need of exchange. Corporations are corporations though. Whatever.
So 90 days is pretty much the longest return policy I've seen. Anyhow - from what I've read, and what I've seen in the last few hours with my new Elph, I am really happy with the price/features. I had low light and took clear pictures of Rufus. The dogs become my test subjects. Next I will be eager to try it on mom's puppies. The black of the dogs coupled with the lack of sitting still will be fun. In ANY case, I feel like this little Elph packs a punch with just enough adjust ability as well. I can still control ISO levels and it's a point and shoot? How fucking cool can you get? I also just read they make waterproof cases that are lightweight for this model. While I should not spend too much right now, I may consider it for my hiking treks anyway - along with a one or two gig memory card - to complete my set.
This is my 150lb gift to myself! Sweet.
So, this morning I sip on the java and listen to my all time favorite: Tool. It's Samhain. Although one of the scariest holidays on many scales... damn, I just realized I missed one of my favorite OLOTEAS events ever... the Samhain. FUCK. Digressing :(
Back to the thought that it's Samhain. 2007. I have much to contemplate. As well as a personal ritual I will hold tonight, which is nice. Jim will be out of the house. He is taking a trip to Vancouver today to go trick or treating with his nephews, see his brother, and meet a friend down there. He said he is probably not spending the night - but we'll see. This enables me to do a few things I've been meaning to do ritualistically speaking in the new place.
The girls just invited me to dessert at Claim Jumpers. Apparently Mel said we had made full plans for tonight to do it. I don't remember that. I pretty much declined based on account of sugar overload and schedule conflict. 7PM is when I like to be just getting back from my run - which means I'd turn down a run for dessert? Somehow this seems not so much in my style.
Besides. I think I'd rather make my own better dessert. The kind I can enjoy and not feel like I am paying for an entire week worth of running-deficit calories with. If that makes sense.
I have been having fun with my camera. !!! Yeay.
Also: Inna I adore you.
And speaking OF you... I will eventually post photos shot with my new Elph.
I just love how small it is!
And I'm majorly bummed I spaced it on the Samhain OLO. That is my favorite OLO all year and this year I seem to have just... missed it. Damn damn. Damn damn damn.

Jim and I will contemplate one either for Yule... or maybe sometime in the early months next year. (March, April... when the hollydays settle down a bit.
