Sometimes you have to hit bottom really hard before you're willing to look at your life and go "well that is really fucked up" and until then it can be really hard to look at things from any other point of view then the one you have going. It'll probably take a while for him to realize that things aren't working and won't work no matter how hard he tries to make them.
