Fact of the day
Mar. 25th, 2005 08:16 amOn a Yahoo Question site for kids...
Luckily for us, it doesn't take seven years (as lots of myths have it). In fact, our stomach doesn't digest gum at all! Since it's made out of soluble fiber, chewing gum passes right through us. So gum comes out with the rest of your waste, usually a day or two after you eat it. Although you shouldn't swallow chewing gum, it is not considered harmful. Check out our hopping Gum category for more facts about this chewy treat, or peruse our Digestive System category to learn about how we break down food into energy. Here's a challenge--can you find out where gum comes from?
I can rest easily that all those packs of gum I ate as a child haven't stayed inside of me.
[I knew it was a myth, I would have no space in my stomach left due to years of gum-swallowing. I still swallow my gum.
