Not fun. Dog accusations.

*sighs*
I was rather frustrated last night – and I am only going to try and write this and not get too frustrated again. A month ago or so, Jim got a note on his apt door about the dogs. Apparently there was a “complaint” about them. Neighbors saying it sounded like HUGE dogs upstairs, etc etc. Which is pretty damned funny because we all know my dogs aren’t huge. There was also an accusation that I wasn’t picking up after them outside.
THIS is completely untrue. I have plastic baggies in my car, and if I don’t have one on hand I either 1- go to the mail area and use newspaper and throw it in the garbage, or 2- run to my car and get a dog baggy out of it to pick up with.
I do this EVERY time I take my dogs out. There hasn’t, safe to say – been one instance where I left the shit on the ground. Now, I admit there have been times I picked up my dogs’ shit only to find someone else’s pile later on in our walks… which is infuriating enough.
Jimmy went down to the office last time to complain, to ensure the visiting dogs were okay, etc etc. I guess there is one lady down there that has it in for them, (Jim and the guys)… because it’s been a month and they got another note on their door about how they were “breaking lease terms,” and that there were 3 complaints in about my dogs, and how office management WITNESSED me not picking up after my dogs.
Both Jim and I were incensed. How is that possible? He double checked that there were no instances where I might not have cleaned up after them. To my memory, no. There may have been an instance where I left to get my baggies – but barring that situation, no.
This upsets me greatly – obviously. First off, whoever is complaining … well, what the fuck? My dogs are 90% quiet, (occasionally they’ll bark) and I honestly clean up after them. They’re not shitting in the apartment, and I take them for 2-4 walks a day. They don’t shit THAT frequently and I have no issues with picking up after my dogs. I’ve been picking up after a dog for most of my life, so shit doesn’t me. I’m not lazy about it. I don’t leave crap in the middle of grass fields… I never have.
So how can you fix a problem like this? I can’t do anything else more. I am ALREADY picking up after them.
Jim wrote an email to the office. I’ll post it later today…
I just don’t know what to do. How is there proof that it’s me? Who are these people complaining? There is management who live in the apartment. Yeah – that’s fine. But obviously they have it out for the guys I hear. Because They are using my dogs as a huge issue to try and push pressure on their lease. This is terribly uncomfortable for me in several reasons:
1- I hate to threaten anyone’s lease.
2- There’s nothing I can do to rectify it
3- These are unfounded accusations!
4- It is not very possible for me to visit much at all without them
I have seen several other dogs in the area.
And yet apparently it’s only ME who gets accused of leaving it.
How in the fuck can that be?
*sighs* I guess this is my chance to call Pre-Paid-Legal and see if they have any ideas for me as to how to handle the situation outside of Jim's respectful letter.

Date: 2006-08-25 03:58 pm (UTC)Also, have the landlords met the dogs? It might help to arrange a "pet interview" with the landlord. Let the boys win them over.
Read the lease, and look for any statement about burden of proof with respect to lease violations. If pets are allowed full time, pay the pet deposit so that the dogs aren't classified as "visitors" anymore.
You can also write a letter stating that you have always picked up after your dogs. Explain about going to get a bag on occassions when you run out, and apologize for the misunderstanding that arose from someone witnessing you leave to get something to pick up the feces with.
If it escalates, get a letter of reference from your current landlord, possibly even past landlords, stating that your dogs have never been a problem and that you have always been careful not to leave dog waste after the walks.
