This discussion has come up some. Jim regards it in a few ways. Although this would go through several walls if you actually used it for home defense, it would definitely do the job (and not necessarily leave too much of an attacker to question things later).
Target practice, keeping his marksmanship up is the best thing I can think of. He's obviously pretty well versed at marksmanship - having actual combat experience etc etc.
He doesn't exactly want to lose a skill that he likes to have.
Secondarily, he is into home defense. It makes him feel safer, as he has been assaulted before - and he has a pretty strong protective nature (go figure, not so shocking considering his first career of choice.)
Thirdly, possibly... bigger guns scare people more. Folks are less likely to ask questions if you've got an assault rifle verses a handgun (although a handgun would be more kind to your neighbors if you did decide to blow a hole through some asshole.)
And leave less bits of human around the house...
It would seem he is very at home with an assault rifle in his hands, as well. I think this is a hold over from the active duty-Iraq days. Perhaps having become an intrinsic part of him, his most familiar, most warm fuzzy (hah, if you can imagine saying his old war days SHOULD do this, it's not necessarily so...) gun. Folks will go towards familiarity. I think it does bring back some of the better memories that he has had with his old unit and actual enjoyment of equipment. Nicer than actually needing to use it on a day to day basis, no doubt.
:) There's your essay!! hehe. And yes, I am sure Jim will be keeping it rather pretty.
I was wondering if I'd be needing to make room in bed for it... (JK).

Old pics of Jim when he was younger and starving in Iraq:
And I posted pics because I know you're a picture whore. ;)
And I like them. They're shiny.
The middle picture is neat because it's actually of him and a Ukrainian soldier. Somehow that makes it cool. Different armies working together; even if Iraq is lametastic.
