When heronguy got done with 9 years in the navy, he found a job doing security with Pinkerton on a Mercer Island private estate. I'm sure they have other positions on the east side, might be worth a look.
This office facilitates the transition back to civilian life. See if he can't hit Ft. Lewis for a chat. He has 180 days after leaving the service to utilize ACAP. Good luck!
Volt places lots of contractors at the Borg and lots of other Eastside businesses. They have temp, temp to permanent, and permanent. Might be worth a visit to one of their offices.
Immediately out of the Navy, I took tickets at a parking garage. It provided income, kept my days free for *real* job search and (this is important to some vets) allowed me to walk in to work one day and say, "I quit" (because after 4 years of not being able to say it, it was quite fun).
For myself, I've floated from an assortment of the 'I quit' variety of jobs. From night cashier/clerks at convenience stores to bar security to being a rigger for Las Vegas Shows.
Right now, my current occupation is working security. I find the job mind numbingly easy, decent pay with enough time on my hands to pursue other things. Should I ever feel the need, I could attend school and get the homework done while at work.
www.allied-barton.com is the link for the security group I work for. Starting wages average $9-10, depending on the position and company you are working security for. There is a uniform, no weapons. The training is of the 'sit at a computer and answer common sense questions' for 4-6 hours. There is a drug test, administered at the main office.
If you have additional questions, drop me a message and I'll give you more details for the place I work. Assuming he wants to commute to Downtown Seattle...
