At least I can rely on circuit training with other stuff that does not revolve around my knee tendons. The jury is out on whether or not to run. I should make a followup apt with my doc. And maybe then talk... So confusing.
So I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but have you ever considered doing intensive yoga? I do Bikram (he started as a bodybuilder in India, dropped a weight on his knee and destroyed it, then built it back up and healed completely with hatha yoga). It's very low impact and centers around rushing blood to every last corner of the body, which speeds the healing process. It also builds tremendous strength (much of it in the legs and back), helping to put less strain on the joints. Any good teacher would bend over backwards (lol, maybe literally) to be accomodating with your injury. I've hurt myself in class (I'm too naturally stretchy and sometimes push over the edge) once, and was told to come back right away (doesn't seem logical)- I healed the injury by doing the yoga I got the injury in, super fast. There's a new studio opening in Redmond pretty soon, one in Renton, a couple in Seattle... anyway, it's definitely worth at least a try if you are willing.
I have thought about doing yoga actually. Mostly fitting it into my budget would definitely be... a challenge, but somehow your mention of cardio, this body builder guy, and your own experiences hearten me. Maybe I should take a serious look into this as a part of my healing plan.
BESIDES! New stuff is... fun. I think I will look into this for sure. Intensive yoga. I will have to look into what places in Issaquah might be able to help me out... In the back recesses of my mind I had contemplated taking it up merely to ensure that I stayed fit in others ways. I had not thought of it as an aid to healing.
Bikram yoga is what we do- it's a pure hatha yoga sequence. It's best to stick to a Bikram studio initially- there are other studios that offer 'hot yoga', but you can never be totally sure what you're getting. I'd be wary of ashtanga/'flow'/vinyasa yoga- they don't tend to allow for the periods of savasana (intense stillness) that pure hatha requires- this is where your body is allowed to assimilate benefits and let blood flow freely.
There's a Bikram classfinder at www.bikramyoga.com. There is a studio in Kirkland called the Ashram that offers various kinds of hot yoga, and they do have a certified Bikram instructor (this is important- 9 weeks of crazy training with Bikram, learning the sequence inside and out and learning the dialogue).
Lots of dudes (even firefighters!) do this as well. I'm building muscle where I didn't think muscle existed ;)
Also- every studio is different, but most offer a cheap intro special (i.e. 10 days consecutively for $10-20, 30 days, etc.) so you can try it and see if it would help you out. We did 5 days for $20 up here, did the 5 days as instructed, and got addicted to it :)
We've been to the Bellevue studio, can't say we had the best experience, but some people dig it. They do have nice showers. I'd recommend the Redmond studio when it opens up...
