Part of me wants to let loose and go have a good time without worrying about the "health" retractions. Is that the right word I am looking for? I think it is.

Things that dehydrate me, these days I avoid. Like my blessed coffee sometimes.
Or more than a limited amount of beer and wine. I'm seriously tempted to just let loose and have a couple of drinks. But usually I find ways to talk myself out of this.

Coffee anyone?
Beer? Wine???

N/m. These days I focus so much on what is better for me, and so I just avoid. Like I said.

Talk to me about what you see as dehydration.
Is there something that causes you to get an unhealthy level of dehydrated?

A "couple of drinks" - I'd say 3-4 for a woman such as yourself - will not cause massive dehydration in its own right. Hangover perhaps, but not dehydration. Anything beyond that, you'd be best served alternating drinks with equal measure of water.

Most hangovers are induced by residual sugar and low-grade dehydration, so it is easily counteracted by drinking a quart of Gatorade or other sports drink before retiring for the evening. (Or, as I have done in the past, start the morning with a Gatorade with an Emergen-C mixed in)

Sweating profusely for an hour and a half a day in 105 temp (although this week I am not going as much) usually leaves me playing catch-up on fluids.

I can no longer drink as much alcohol as I once did (2 drinks I cap out of because I feel it more acutely than, say I once did.)

rhetorically: Who thought it was a good idea to do yoga in a sauna?

long story short: unless you start riding the night train every night, and so long as you keep whatever-has-replaced-Nalgene-bottle close by during the day, you should be able to imbibe without negative repercussions.

No worries. I think I've got a pretty good handle on myself.
Not that your input wasn't nice ;)

I usually just avoid it because it has no real great purpose other than fun.

I'm getting the feeling that "fun" isn't enough of a reason for you. You seem to be pounding yourself pretty hard. I hope there is a break of some sort (alcoholic or otherwise) hidden in there somewhere.

Moderation in all things... including moderation.

I think you're right here. I think this week is a good time for me to lay off and be a little mellow.

Half of the time I don't realize when I'm working myself hard.
Sounds dirty ;)

I hope I don't come off as bitchy.
Really, really.
I like your icon btw.

I must remind myself:
Biting people who are helpful usually isn't too nice unless they ask for it...

You don't come across as bitchy.
In the same vein, I hope I don't come across as bossy or pedantic.

It is abundantly clear that you're passionate about this and I am loathe to step between someone and their passion. That said, there is a very fine line between hobby and obsession.

hahhahahaha: "That said, there is a very fine line between hobby and obsession."

I think on some level I was obsessed with running.
The yoga? I just do it because I am that desperate to heal.
And it had other benefits that came across in the journey. Someday I'll enjoy a balanced combo of all 3 of my hobbies...

The all or nothing girl indeed... sigh. Moderation, is indeed important.

Thanks for commenting. It is nice to know there are people out there.
So very nice.
One could even say it makes my day...

Obviously not you.
And it's a good thing you're not me.
Because I happen to like it on my shitty tendons.

The heat is good, you just have to keep up with your hydration. As a rule, people don't drink nearly enough hydrating fluid, and when you're working out at this intensity level you have to overcompensate... mineral replacement is also critical.

I can attest to habitually backing off sugary/caffeinated/alcoholic drinks due to Bikram- being even slightly overstimulated (with caffeine especially) and dehydrated makes any kind of workout, especially one that requires intense mental focus, EXTREMELY difficult.

I usually don't go to yoga the day after I've had more than one glass of wine- hangover or no, it hits you harder than you might think when you're digging deep like in yoga class.

Yesssss. This is exactly what I mean.
It's not that it in and of itself "dehydrates," me.
It's that dehydration or no, I avoid it most days because of the impact it has on my practice.

You really notice it. Fact is - I wouldn't have expected that unless I experienced it.

I avoid these things on a daily basis for this reason - thus my post. And you, hit the nail on the head. Lucky for me I was always a "thirsty" person who preferred liquid in larger amounts than average (always earning frustrated glances from waitresses constantly refilling my glasses - but I usually warn them).

Needless to say. I find that with the demands of Bikram, it's best to stay ahead of hydration, because once you fall behind for the day or the following day rather, there's no easy "catch up." Which makes sense now, to me that you would skip class the following day.

Alcohol and caffeine are diarrhetics. This means they cause you to blow through your hydration QUICKER. And this is the reason for my post/avoidance.

:)

But I don't need to explain that to you - S. Because it'd be choir preaching :P
